Applying for your baby’s passport? It’s easy!

“Really, you’re done?” My husband asked in disbelief over the phone when I told him that it took me just about 50 minutes to finish the passport application of our baby and our firstborn at the Department of Foreign Affairs Megamall Consular Office. Yup, just 50 minutes for both of them. It was that fast, and boy, it was easy! So if you’re planning to apply for your baby’s passport soon, you might want to read along!

trey

Just the other week, I finally had the time to visit DFA Megamall to get passports for my boys. The kids missed a supposedly travel opportunity with the dad last December and I certainly don’t want that to happen again (and besides, we should be ready by the time the next insane seat sale strikes again, yes?). So finally,  I had to do my long-overdue passport application for my sweet kids. Kuya Kyle’s old passport is expiring this month while our baby needed to finally get one. So the mission was to get  each of them a new passport, outright.

But before I go on with the details, I would just like to share that when applying for a passport for infants or minors below 1-year-old (like I did), you don’t have to schedule an appointment with DFA online. Also, one member of the family (mom, dad or a sibling) may apply together with the infant and can enjoy the super powers of directly going to the courtesy lane, hence my firstborn also enjoyed the truly fast transaction together with his baby brother! But for this particular post, please be noted that I’ll focus mainly on requirements for new passport application for infants (not the passport renewal). Let me now walk you through the application process.

I. The Requirements

  • Personal Appearance of the minor
  • NSO Birth Certificate
  • NSO Marriage Certificate of Parents (if married)
  • Personal appearance of either parent and valid passport of parents (if minor is a legitimate child)
  • Personal appearance of mother and proper ID or valid passport of mother (if minor is an illegitimate child)
  • Original and photocopy of valid passport of the person traveling with the minor

(Check the list of passport requirements for different individuals at the DFA website which you can do so by clicking here.)

II. The Application Process

Step 1: Complete the requirements and fill out the application form for your child.

Well of course, you have to make sure that all your requirements are complete before heading to DFA. Bring original copies and photocopies of  the required paperwork and for your convenience, there’s a photocopier inside DFA office (but it’s recommended to reproduce necessary documents before hand).  Inside DFA, the guard will usher you to the personnel who will hand the application form. Once done filling out the form, you’ll be directed to get a number for the courtesy lane that is especially assigned for minors below 1 year old, senior citizens, pregnant women, people with disability and other qualified citizens.

Step 2. Submit requirements.

No need to hurdle the looong queue as the line there is usually short (there was no one ahead of us when we applied!). Hand all the documents to the personnel in-charge who will then verify your documents. Once done, you’ll be directed to the next stop which is the Cashier.

Step 3: Pay the fees.

You’ll have to pay  Php1,200 should you opt to have the 7-day express  processing or Php950 if you want the regular 15-day processing at the Cashier.

Step 4:  Picture-taking!

After paying,  you’ll be directed to the post where your baby’s photo will be taken, the last stop.

Step 5: Wait for the passport.

Right before leaving the doorsteps of DFA, there’s an area where you can pay an additional P150 should you want your child’s passport delivered via LBC but should you like to pick up, no need to pay! That’s it and you’re done! I must say, kudos  DFA Megamall  for that truly fast and hassle-free service!

hi mommy..just want to ask, I need to process my baby’s passport but it says there i will also need an NSO copy of our marriage cert.with my hubby, the prob is I don’t have an NSO copy yet since lack of knowledge about marrying an expat but I have our marriage cert.from AU..so late registration also means time consuming and he has to have a passport..anyway mommy to cut the story..will it be possible for me to get his passport without the marriage cert.?in my passport is still my maiden name written on.We just need to have his passport to visit his sick Grandfather. Thanks for the info mommy 🙂

Hi, Shining Mom! I just visited the DFA website, and it says that NO APPOINMENT is NEEDED for minors aged 7 years old and below ? I’m guessing it’s a recent rule?

    Hi!

Just want to ask, my baby is 7 months now and no need to get an appointment from DFA online. You says that one member of the family may apply together. When I was there in DFA Alabang together with my son, si baby lang pwede mag walk-in tapos courtesy lane. Ako as her mother hindi daw pwede mag walk-in, need ko daw kumuha ng online appointment. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

Hello, mommy! This post is based on my experience po at DFA Megamall branch. The kuya of my baby was able to apply without appointment. DFA Megamall is allowing one child/adult to ride with the infant priority pass.

Hi, I ve got information na pwede din walk in mga kids ages below 7. Any idea if that is factual? I ve read din online about the courtesy lane policy but that was published 2014 pa. My kids are 3 and 5 yrs old respectively, we are supposed to leave the country by end of June pero when I checked online appointment, July was the earliest possible date. ?
    Thanks in advance.
