Improper toilet hygiene can cause diarrhoeal disease and parasitic worm infections which can lead to nutritional deficiencies, physical and mental stunting, and death.
Scary, isn’t it?
To encourage Filipinos to increase awareness on the importance of maintaining a clean and germ-free toilet, Unilever Homecare Group (UHG) and its brand Domex has shown great support to the World Toilet Day with their One Million Toilets Movement, of which I am also encouraging you to take part today.
According to a a study conducted by conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), there is a great number of school kids that catch diseases due to poor sanitation and hygiene practices, including using unsanitary toilets. It has been reported that global toilet sanitation problem leads to 443 million missed school days. And to give you a more vivid picture on how alarming the problem is, this number of sick days is equivalent to all grade school and high school classrooms in the Philippines being empty for one month– imagine that!
Truly alarming because poor toilet sanitation can cause diseases like diarrhea, the second-leading cause of death among children that are aged 5 years and below. And the sad truth? Every day, millions of children nationwide are exposed to these health problems by using dirty toilets populated by disease-carrying germs.
Dr. Luisa Efren of the Philippine Public Health Association (PPHA) said that the simple act of proper toilet sanitation can help prevent the spread of these germs. However, children continue to be at risk from these deadly diseases because many households do not clean their toilets properly.
“A toilet that looks clean to the naked eye may not necessarily be free from germs and bacteria. So, it is very important to properly sanitize all surfaces using a germ-kill expert with proven efficacy in eliminating bacteria, and not just any ordinary laundry bleach,” Dr. Efren warned. And we know that usual laundry bleach that most household here in the country use to clean toilet bowls is not enough to kill all toilet germs. We need to use tesded germ-kill expert brands, like DOMEX.
Help spread the One Million Clean Toilets Movement, help spread the awareness on the sanitation issue caused by unsanitary toilets! You may also check out Domex Philippines on Facebook to know more about this campaign!
