Growing up, becoming a teacher had never crossed my mind. Just like any other kid, I went through phases on what I would like to become one day. I dreamt of becoming a ballerina, a chef, a lady pilot, a lawyer, a farmer… but never a teacher.
When I was in high school, I became aware of my love for words. I remember cutting out articles from YoungStar and Reader’s Digest, the only printed materials available at home that I was allowed to clip. I enjoyed reading stories and I also tried to write my own. I also kept a notebook of my written short stories and poems.
After high school, I gave in to my love for words. That is why, I took up BA in Mass Communication major in Journalism at the University of the Philippines for my tertiary education.
My cousin Emmalyn and I graduated in the same year at the same university, and so we applied for work together. She was my roommate in my entire kolehiyala years after all. She is a graduate of BA Social Sciences major in Economics. She said she wanted to try teaching and she convinced me to teach. When we were both given the chance, l’ve decided to give it a try too. And I will never regret the day I signed my teaching contract. I never imagined that I would still teach seven years later.

Eventually, I’ve learned to love teaching. I enjoy hearing the noise of learning in class while my students and I learn together. But I still write though. Once in a while, I submit articles to local publications, plus I have this blog to keep my fingers pounding when I feel like writing; enough to sustain my love for words. It feels nice to do things I both enjoy.
My cousin Emmalyn is now in Canada and she is no longer a teacher. And me? I used to have only one reason to teach: to give it a try, but now, I have a number of reasons why I am enjoying this vocation. I am not sure yet as to how many more months or years I would be holding the whiteboard marker, but for as long I am still a teacher, I will savor each moment.
Today, I am celebrating. It’s technically my day. Happy Teacher’s Day to Me!
